The following is for the intern meeting for students at the AMMC. There will be a case presentation on osteosarcoma in the meeting room of the auditorium at 10 am pdt on Sat May 9, 2009.

With the population in the world increaing in age, there is a much greater need for understanding the health issues of the elderly, especially in ED care. Dr Y gave an interesting and interactive lecture on some of the problems facing medicine, and emergency med in particular, as the world’s population ages. This attendee was surprised to learn that a high percentage of elderly coming to the ED with other problems, like a fall, are in delirium and that they are released from the hopital without ever being treated for delirium. In fact, the statistic is that 38% of elderly in deliruim who visit an ED are released and never treated.

To clear the confusion, delirium is an acute condition and is treatable, whereas dementia has a long onset and is usually not treatable. Dr Y said that a lot of times simply hydrating the patient reverses the delirium. It is very scary to this student to know that so many EDs are missing the signs and releasing people who could be easily treated and helped.

Dr Glasgow is going to present an infectious disease case to the students and Berci will be demonstrating the use of second life at a conference during the presentation…..all students and staff are urged to be there.

vera has a couple of exercises planned…1/19/08 at 10 am slt..an er exercise. The surgical exercise is for 1/26/08 10 am slt (both are saturdays) and then we’ll have our first monthly student meeting at 11:30 am on 1/26. So if you’re interested in being a student you can come see these and join in and talk to one of the docs about membership. All ammc students should plan to be at ammc for these. Let’s keep dr. Ann’s dream alive!
