This is the entrance of the rebuild AMMC, on the picture you see a photo of Dr Ann who began AMMC. Although she is no longer active involved in AMMC, AMMC considered it fitting if her photo would be one of the first things you see when entering AMMC.

 This AMMC hospital is smaller as the old one, so everything inside it is some what smaller, but not less functional, picture below here is one of the offices. 

For training purposes, the emergency, radiology, surgery and recovery are located within glass walls, this assures educators to watch every step in a simulation.

 AMMC now does not only have a hospital building, new is a Resource building, in this resource building is room for special projects, exhibitions, etc. At this moment there are 2 projects housed in the resource building:

-H1N1, AMMC still think it is necessary to monitor it.

-Breast cancer and breast awareness.

A project in the making is about domestic violence.

A third edition is a multi functional building, the top floor can be used for intern meetings and medium seize speeches, other possible use, include conferences and offices.

I almost forgot the most important things in this season, the Christmas trees, yes the have decoration and lights and send all visitors warm season greetings!!! Someone even placed gifts under the tree with a message no peaking, wich is very bad for me since I am incredibly curious .

Lately no real activity on this blog, after seeing the opening picture, you understand why. AMMC will get a new building, new on the SIM is buildings from Sprott Shaw college. Sprott Shaw is a RL Canadian college and is so kind to have supported the SIM, that  AMMC shares with them. 

During this reconstruction phase, it is no wonder activities decline a bit, but AMMC is not without ambitious plans. Beside the teaching of medical students, the plan is to have a, once a month, consultation time, each month with a different specialism. These consultation times are for RL questions from the SL audience, the plan is to have these consultations more or less in line with US timezones, for breast (cancer) awareness monthly consultations are planned too. 

The intern meetings; Last month we had a great meeting on Oncology, the October meeting has moved to November 7 at 11 AM SL time, this intern meeting will be held in the castle of one of our board members.

The topic of this intern meeting novel H1N1, hope to meet you all, intern nurse physician board member, member or reader of this blog entry.

In january AMMC was contacted to be present again on Relay for Life, with the specific question to adress breast cancer.  After some month’s this is the end result, a roller coaster.

When you have been diagnosed your life becomes an emotional roller coaster (i borrowed this sentence AMMC hopes that with this coaster, we created a different way to make more women and men aware of breast cancer.

Relay for Life is now over, this virtual Relay did raise well over 270.000 US dollar, a huge succes ranking secondlife’s relay as number 2 in best raising relays!!! Is there someone still doubting that a virtual world can not have effects in the real world??

Also i do like to share with you 2 extra picture’s and one comment, the picture is part of therollercoaster AMMC designed for Relay for Life. the comment is the following:

I think all involved in either AMMC or in Relay for Life this year are glad it is over for this year it is an awesome event to be a small part of, but it takes a lot of energy.

Our latest addition in AMMC will be thrown in the deep end
at once, he will be giving a presentation about novel H1N1.

The objectives of this update on novel H1N1
will be to provide information
(1) on the molecular structure of the influenza A virus and how it changes,
(2) the spread of the virus,
(3) diagnosis and treatment, and
(4) potential concerns for a pandemic.

The presentation will be given using powerpoint and voice
and is intended for both the healthcare worker and the interested layperson.
Raven McCullough is, in RL, a MD/PhD trained in infectious diseases and
is a professor engaged in research at an university medical center.
This H1N1 update will be presented on Sat, May 16, at 10 AM SLT.

After the presentation there will be a short musical intermezzo, i like to keep you in suspense a bit who she is
In this time there is the possibility for a guided tour in flying seats,
around AMMC hospital. Wer strongly advice those that take this flyiing seats tour,
to remain seated in flight since emergency will be closed during this presentation

I did that cause oncology and AMMC have a long history, as does AMMC, a virtual hospital and the American cancer society!! Their motto this year: One world one hope!!! I am dutch, no doctor yet, but we need one world, one hope!!! The AMMC project hopes to be a part of that hope!!!!

A  great deal of AMMC staff is active as Cancer care givers, some staff is Cancer experience expert, and some are important volunteers!!! For all of you  i posted a  party Oncology and a  party!!!

Folks there is more then one way to defeat cancer!!!!  Dancing on dance island in sl is one way!!!!!!!!  please dontate!!!!

Now more AMMC style, next intern meeting is probably a  week later as usuall, but worth waitinfg  for, Dr Cary about Oncology. The women health centre has updated screens.

First 2 month of 2009 are almost over,
a start of the year in wich AMMC, took a major step
in one of the reasons AMMC was founded for.

AMMC was created, by Doctor Ann Buchanan to test the possibilities of
virtual training for First Life medical and nursing students.
Concerning nursing students , this is
a post from a real life nurse educator
and valuable AMMC member about the first
nursing training/simulation.

Hello,

My name is Tessa Finesmith. I am in Nursing Education at
Riverland Community College in Austin, MN, USA.
It has been a hope to be able to do simulations
in Second Life with our nursing students,
and February 13th we took our first step.

 I feel fortunate to have found The Ann Myers Medical Center.
After months of immersing in Second Life to learn ” the ropes,”
and countless conversations with Nix Stransky, Vera Zhaoying,
Fidelius Dollinger, we held a mulitdisciplinary simulation.

The scenario was of a patient who entered a hospital with flu
syndrome, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, which of course caused
dehydration. As part of treatment, an IV of D5W was started at 200 ml/hour.
Over the course of this patients 3 day stay,
the IV was never turned down and the patient went from a
dehydrated status to fluid overload and subsequent
congestive heart failure with pulmonary edema.

We do not have the computers to support the students in building avatars,
so they were in a classroom while the simulation played out.

It was a huge success! The students liked it, thought it was fun,
and had a great dialogue going on amongst themselves as to
what to do first to help this patient.
They were even on the right path to question
the rate of the IV and to slow it down.

Vera was on hand to be called to get provider orders from
and to give a report to. Nix played the lab personal and
delivered ABG’s report and also x-ray tech to deliver chest x-ray report.

Fidelius was the grandson.. who got pushed off away and no one was talking to him.

After the simulation, a debriefing session occurred. Nix,
Vera and Fidelius stayed to talk about their roles in this.
We talked about poor Fid getting left without anyone talking to
him about his poor granny!I cannot thank them enough for their help with this!

Since this was my first time doing a simulation, I did not post the date and time,
so we all could see how this went.

I do hope to do another simulation at AMMC in March with CVA being the focus.
I will post the date and time for that one on the calendar,
so you are welcome to come to see how we are doing this.

Another goal, why Doctor Ann Buchanan,
to assist students to become more proficient in initial exam history and physicals.
The patient often reveals many important aspects of their disorder through
their words if the physician takes the time to listen. In this fast-paced world,
med students are not being appropriately trained to listen.

To better support this goal Ann  invisioned,
AMMC created a special history and physicals room.
It is located in the old ER!.
This room is still a work in progress,
but AMMC hopes that it is a usefull addition to
AMMC ’s training capabilities, as well as place,
where AMMC public feels free to ask questions.

Last but not least, the next intern meeting:
february 28 at 10 AM, location AMMC conference area.
Topic is basic CPR.
This topic is chosen, cause (AMMC) medical staff,
is not always surrounded by crash carts, various medication
and if need be an ACLS team.

But if you are in a restaurant with friends,
and across the street someone turns grey, grab his chest and collapses.
Rest assure you are the person they look at, to go save this person.
