About

AMMC is a medical center, in a virtual world, called Second life.

It was created originally by a US professor in medicine,the reason she did that: she was not content how medical schools, trained students to interact with people, who happened to be a patient. She used AMMC to teach her students to listen to patients, to care (but to keep enough professional distance.

After she died, AMMC was “adopted”, by several people, including a resident internal medicine, and AMMC changed a bit,    AMMC is still involved in training medical staff,but also to create health awareness, and an information point on medical and social issues.

    Hi Sandy….a lot of us are out of town or are at meetings this week, so AMMC has been quiet. We’re working on developing a curriculum through sloodle…sl + moodle..take a look at sloodle.com. We’re also going to be working with SPrott-Shaw to develop a curiculum for their nursing program.

    What we’re doing now is presenting interesting and unique cases to the students, encouraging peer-discussions and covering the case in detail with them. Ann is away, but I’ll be willing to meet with you and go over ideas and plans and show you around…let me know. In SL I’m Vladimir Burdeyna.

    Greetings, Ernie. Are you already a member of the Second Life community? If so, we can certainly make arrangements for a tour. If you are not a member, you will need to go to http://www.secondlife.com and create an avatar through their site, dowloading the software and creating a name for your avatar. Your students will need to do the same in order to access the Second Life environment. Please let me know the name of the avatar you have created by leaving a message here or by writing to me at hemedoc@hotmail.com. I will be more than happy to give you a tour of our facility and discuss plans for medical training.

    Hi,
    I’ve just started work on a project with the University of Sussex. We are looking at ways to use Second Life for educational purposes that may not be possible in First Life. My team has been given the task of investigating cultural issues in medicine (specifically whether stereotypes should be a factor in medical treatment and the subtle choices involved) and designing a means to teach the subject to nursing students. I stumbled upon your medical centre and it seems to me that you already have in place some of the things we are trying to research, If you could provide me with any more information on your lessons and how you’ve achieved what you’ve done in Second Life it would be greatly appreciated.

    I am teaching a new class at California State with the objective of teaching nursing graduate students how to teach online. I am not a nursing instructor, I am in the teacher education department. The class is designed to be an overview of what distance education is and can be. I would like them to have an experience in SL because I feel it represents much that is possible in DE and also contains many topics of interest to them. Would there be a good time we could drop into the center to see what it is all about?

    My name is Michael and I work at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) on a program called MedEdPORTAL. MedEdPORTAL is a free, open-source, online publishing venue for medical educational resources. This is a globally accessible and free application. I’m interested in posting MedEdPORTAL workshops on SL but am unsure how to begin. I came across the AMMC and was wondering how I could access your program.     So i have promised you the videos of the breast cancer convention 2008 in second life. Well, it gaves any trouble with this videos to get in, in the Internet. But i have found videos in the Internet of this convention, in a more better quality as mine. Look on this site for video. Here is the Link:

    For two weeks i sent Tessa Finesmith 2 DVDs to Amercia with the videos where i made it on this convention and one of the DVDs has 2 videos about “Meet The Professor in Secondlife”. This was a question-round with the professor after the main meeting.

    Her guys at the College will try to look, if there is a possible to get the videos in the Internet for us. That were really nice, when this works.

    I’m a journalist who’s writing a story for a physicians magazine called Diversion on the subject of online CME. Last fall American Medical News ran a story about Ann Myers Medical Center in Second Life and the possibility that doctors might be able to earn continuing medical education credits there. “Elspet Glasgow” was quoted in the story as saying “some continuing medical education providers have contacted AMMC about becoming a CME center, a service that exists on other virtual platforms, but not yet in Second Life.” Is CME credit now available through AMMC, or are there definite plans for it to be available? And how will such CME be conducted? If there is a press release or some other information online about this, would you please point me to it?

I am also a graduate student in educational technology online through Boise State University. I am currently taking the Teaching and Learning in Virtual Worlds course. For my final project I am developing a video about medical sites in Second Life that I will present at the Australian Chiropractic Education Summit in Melbourne, Australia in July, 2009.
