AMMC is a medical center, in a virtual world, called Second life.

It was created originally by a US professor in medicine, the reason she did that: she was not content how medical schools, trained students to interact with people, who happened to be a patient. She used AMMC to teach her students to listen to patients, to care (but to keep enough professional distance.

After she died, AMMC was “adopted”, by several people, including a resident internal medicine, and AMMC changed a bit,    AMMC is still involved in training medical staff, but also to create health awareness, and an information point on medical and social issues.

Key words: history and physical, in a virtual world practice your medical imaging interpretation skills, teen clinic, breast (cancer)awareness, avatar health check etc, just use the link in the top post to visit.

hi: I’m a psychologist on faculty in a dept. of psychiatry at a US medical school. How could I get involved in this project? I work on projects that involve national training and have been looking for innovative methods. I’d love to hear more. Where are you physically located?

  6. 6 Bertalan Meskó August 31, 2007 at 4:18 pm

Dear Sandy, please first register at secondlife.com, then I’ll help you how to get to the AMMC in Second Life. Physically, we’re a global team, I have to say. 🙂

Some of us are from the US, others are from Brazil, Germany, Hungary, etc.

  7. 7 Sandy August 31, 2007 at 6:02 pm

    Thanks for the reply!
I am on SL and in fact that’s how I found you – I toured the empty building (and since nobody was around I even tried to get into the exam rooms, but I digress). Anyway, I’m still not sure what you all do, and when… do you have an e-mail group or do you meet on SL?

  8. 8 Bertalan Meskó August 31, 2007 at 6:27 pm

Now I understand you, Sandy. Please take a look at this article, then you’ll know what we actually do: http://tinyurl.com/2la8l8

Give me a date and time, and let’s meet inside SL. 🙂

Hi Sandy….a lot of us are out of town or are at meetings this week, so AMMC has been quiet. We’re working on developing a curriculum through sloodle…sl + moodle..take a look at sloodle.com. We’re also going to be working with SPrott-Shaw to develop a curiculum for their nursing program.

What we’re doing now is presenting interesting and unique cases to the students, encouraging peer-discussions and covering the case in detail with them. Ann is away, but I’ll be willing to meet with you and go over ideas and plans and show you around…let me know. In SL I’m Vladimir Burdeyna.

  10. 10 CC Carnell September 3, 2007 at 8:10 am

    Hi Sandy,
I’m CC Carnell in SL. Try to contact us in SL, and we will be glad to show you the island and answer all your questions.

  11. 11 Sandy September 3, 2007 at 12:50 pm

Thanks everyone! In SL I’m Lolabar Barzane – a name selected before I knew that people did professional things in SL. 🙂

I probably won’t log on until tonight, and hopefully (although not definitely) will be on between 8 and 9 pm EDT. If we don’t connect this weekend (it’s a holiday in the US) then hopefully next weekend. I’ll be traveling this week and away from compatible computers.

Can’t seem to start another topic head, so I’m going to just post a reply. Had an interesting infectious disease case I’m going to present. I need to know what days and times you’re all available…I’ll make a notice about it, but it’d help me if you could either post it here or send me an IM in SL.

I’d love to give my nursing students a tour of the site, but I am not sure how to go about it. Are there arrangments which can be made ?

    ernie

  14. 14 Ann November 12, 2007 at 9:00 pm

Greetings, Ernie. Are you already a member of the Second Life community? If so, we can certainly make arrangements for a tour. If you are not a member, you will need to go to http://www.secondlife.com and create an avatar through their site, dowloading the software and creating a name for your avatar. Your students will need to do the same in order to access the Second Life environment. Please let me know the name of the avatar you have created by leaving a message here or by writing to me at hemedoc@hotmail.com. I will be more than happy to give you a tour of our facility and discuss plans for medical training.

  15. 15 Michelle January 20, 2008 at 4:04 pm

    Hi,
I’ve just started work on a project with the University of Sussex. We are looking at ways to use Second Life for educational purposes that may not be possible in First Life. My team has been given the task of investigating cultural issues in medicine (specifically whether stereotypes should be a factor in medical treatment and the subtle choices involved) and designing a means to teach the subject to nursing students. I stumbled upon your medical centre and it seems to me that you already have in place some of the things we are trying to research, If you could provide me with any more information on your lessons and how you’ve achieved what you’ve done in Second Life it would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Bertalan
I am teaching a new class at California State with the objective of teaching nursing graduate students how to teach online. I am not a nursing instructor, I am in the teacher education department. The class is designed to be an overview of what distance education is and can be. I would like them to have an experience in SL because I feel it represents much that is possible in DE and also contains many topics of interest to them. Would there be a good time we could drop into the center to see what it is all about?
    Thank you for your time.

  18. 18 Bertalan Meskó February 2, 2008 at 1:10 am

    Hello Diana,

Absolutely, I’m pretty sure it would be the pleasure of the whole AMMC staff. Let us know please a time and date and we’ll work it out.

    Hi Ann.

My name is Michael and I work at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) on a program called MedEdPORTAL. MedEdPORTAL is a free, open-source, online publishing venue for medical educational resources. This is a globally accessible and free application. I’m interested in posting MedEdPORTAL workshops on SL but am unsure how to begin. I came across the AMMC and was wondering how I could access your program. Also, if you could provide me with information, or possibly collaborate to show how useful a source like MedEdPORTAL could be in SL.

I look forward to your response.

Hello. I teach Training & Development in the Business Education and Business Information Systems Department at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

I am also a doctoral student at Wilkes University and I am working on a report about how Second Life is instrumental in the training of medical professionals.

Would there be any way we could actually do training in your site on Second Life for the sake of three hours this Wednesday night, November 19th from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m.? It would only be a total of four students.

My name in Second Life is Grace Wozniak and I will forward to you the other three students’ names if you allow this to happen.

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Hi to all,

i wish you all a Merry Christmas, quiet holidays without stress and than a happy, healthy New Year!

So i have promised you the videos of the breast cancer convention 2008 in second life. Well, it gaves any trouble with this videos to get in, in the Internet. But i have found videos in the Internet of this convention, in a more better quality as mine. Look on this site for video. Here is the Link:

    http://www.virtualcancerinstitute.org/

For two weeks i sent Tessa Finesmith 2 DVDs to Amercia with the videos where i made it on this convention and one of the DVDs has 2 videos about “Meet The Professor in Secondlife”. This was a question-round with the professor after the main meeting.

Her guys at the College will try to look, if there is a possible to get the videos in the Internet for us. That were really nice, when this works.

Thanks to Tessa and her guys for trying:-)

I will tell you, when it gives news about this.

    Greetings

I’m a journalist who’s writing a story for a physicians magazine called Diversion on the subject of online CME. Last fall American Medical News ran a story about Ann Myers Medical Center in Second Life and the possibility that doctors might be able to earn continuing medical education credits there. “Elspet Glasgow” was quoted in the story as saying “some continuing medical education providers have contacted AMMC about becoming a CME center, a service that exists on other virtual platforms, but not yet in Second Life.” Is CME credit now available through AMMC, or are there definite plans for it to be available? And how will such CME be conducted? If there is a press release or some other information online about this, would you please point me to it?

    Thanks.

We are a Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute research group currently working on a feasibility study regarding using SL-based standardized patient encounters to train medical students to take medical histories. We were wondering if we could get in contact with you or someone from the medical center, either over the phone or in-world, to discuss some of the history of such projects, some of the details of the AMMC programs, and some of the directions you see medical education in second life going.

    Hi,

I am a medical student based in at the university of Nottingham, England. Currently beginning a experimental Trial based inworld.

I am trying to recruit participants for my project, I wondered if it would be possible to place a poster at the AMMC or if you have a email list I could send a message to. In return I could inform all my participants about your centre if they want to learn more about healthcare on line.

By the way you centre is very impressive, makes my little office look shabby, I hope you are still running on line training events.

Any other help or advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  53. 61 ABCクリニック February 18, 2017 at 1:27 pm

June 6, 2017 at 1:10 pm
